is considered as the most influential contemporary designer in Japan. His design work is based on the simplicity and plainness of everyday life, like the use of colours or white in the Japanese culture. Hara is an interdisciplinary working designer. In his work he combines graphic design, visual communication, product design and theoretical design processes. Since 2002 he works as art director of communication at the lifestyle-chain »Muji«. The name »Muji« means: »No brand«, good products. The cult brand Muji is characterized by a minimalist design, pure functionality and the products are produced using sustainable resources. Well-known designers from all over the world are working anonymously for the Japanese company, by doing so the customer’s attention is focused on the quality and the functionality of the object itself and not on the Designer’s name. Kenya Hara curated several internationally renowned design projects, including the opening and the final program of the Winter Olympic Games in 1998 in Japan and the visual concept of the Expo 2005. He has been awarded with a large number of international design prizes; moreover he published numerous books including »White« and »Designing Design«. Kenya Hara is a professor at Musashino Art University in Tokyo.

è considerato il designer contemporaneo più influente del Giappone. I suoi lavori si fondano sulla semplicità, la sobrietà e la quotidianità, come l’uso dei colori o del bianco nella vita giapponese. Hara è un grafico interdisciplinare, nei suoi lavori unisce graphic design, comunicazione visiva, design del prodotto e progettazione teorica dei processi. Dal 2002 è art director della comunicazione per la catena di Lifestyle »Muji«. Il nome »Muji« significa: »No brand«, buoni prodotti. Il marchio Muji è caratterizzato dal culto di un design minimalista, pura funzionalità e oggetti prodotti da risorse sostenibili. Noti designers di tutto il mondo lavorano per l’azienda giapponese in forma anonima; non conoscere il progettista, concentra l’attenzione del cliente sulla qualità e la pura utilità dell’oggetto. Kenya Hara ha curato numerosi progetti di design internazionali di rilievo tra cui l’apertura e il programma finale dei Giochi Olimpici Invernali nel 1998 in Giappone e il concetto visivo dell’Expo 2005. Inoltre ha ricevuto un gran numero di premi internazionali di design ed è autore di pubblicazioni come »White«, »Designing Design« e molte altre. Kenya Hara è professore presso l‘Università Musashino Art University a Tokyo.

wird als der einflussreichste Designer des heutigen Japan angesehen und betont in seiner Entwurfsarbeit die Einfachheit und Schlichtheit: sowohl bei Dingen des täglichen Gebrauchs, als auch bei der Verwendung von Farben oder von Weiß im japanischen Leben. Hara ist ein interdisziplinär arbeitender Gestalter. Er verbindet in seiner Arbeiten Grafikdesign, visuelle Kommunikation, Produktgestaltung sowie theoretische Designprozesse. Seit 2002 ist er als Art Director für die Kommunikation der Lifestylekette »Muji« verantwortlich. Der Name »Muji« bedeutet: »Keine Marke, gute Produkte«. Die Kultmarke Muji ist geprägt von minimalistischem Design, purer Funktionalität und Produkten, die möglichst ressourcenschonend hergestellt werden. Namhafte Designer auf der ganzen Welt arbeiten für das japanische Unternehmen, allerdings anonym, so dass bei jedem Produkt unklar bleibt, wer es entworfen hat, da lediglich das Design und die pure Nützlichkeit der Produkte den Kunden überzeugen sollen, nicht aber bekannte Namen. Kenya Hara leitete zahlreiche international renommierte Design-Projekte, darunter das Eröffnungs- sowie das Schlussprogramm der olympischen Winterspiele 1998 in Japan und das visuelle Konzept der Expo 2005. Er wurde mit einer grossen Anzahl internationaler Design-Preise ausgezeichnet und ist Autor zahlreicher Publikationen wie: »White«, »Designing Design« und anderen. Kenya Hara ist Professor an der Musashino Art University in Tokyo.
