Eating Animals — a book on today’s meat industry

Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer was released in 2009, after the author’s first-time fatherhood beckoned. It was written with the goal to learn more about where the meat for himself and his family comes from. Focusing on the modern way in which most animals we eat nowadays are produced — mass production and factory farming — he crosses topics like the genetic manipulation of the breeding stock, the circumstances under which the animals are raised, certain common slaughtering techniques and much more.
It’s a thoroughly researched, factual and detailed piece of writing — but nevertheless fairly discomforting at times. It’s NOT an argument for vegetarianism, but written in the hope of getting people to consume meat more consciously and responsibly.
