Extra virgin olive scam

Do you like the green and flavourish bottle of Extra Virgin olive oil you can get at the supermarket for 5€? Lucky you!
As The New York Times reported in january, many of the aforementioned bottles have little in common with our traditional product, as they’re brought on the shelves through a lucrous escamotage.
Oil of very scarce quality (but still certified organic) is obtained in Turkey, Marocco or Tunisia and imported in Spain or Portugal, to be mixed with local one and become a “mix of oil from the European community”. Magic. Then it will be selled on our shelves, maybe with an evident Italian flag on it.

Our politicians have helped the growing of this phenomenon by hardening control procedures on imported goods, as this report explains. Today, a bottle of oil can easily cost little more than 3€, while as much as 100.000€ can be earned for every truck of imported oil.
A bottle of ethically produced in Italy extra virgin olive oil  costs 8€ or more (check the link above for angry italian producers screaming so). Deal with it, or enjoy your Turkish one.
