We are a research group at the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bolzano. Started in 2012 by Giorgio Camuffo, Maddalena Dalla Mura and Alvise Mattozzi, on the occasion of the first edition of the Unibz Design Festival, the group is interested in investigating the meanings of learning in the field of design.
In a period when the proliferation of design schools in the North-Western part of the world has been followed by both the emergence of “parallel” educational projects, started by students themselves, and restructurations imposed by financial cuts, it seems important to consider and reflect anew on the core objective of any educational enterprise: learning.
The term “learning” means both the act/experience of learning, the knowledge/skill
acquired by instruction or study, and the modification of a behavioural tendency by experience. What does learning mean in the field of design? How can one learn to design? Can we learn from design? How to learn by design? What kind of experiences, disciplines, and compentecies are needed to learn design in the 21st century?
We are working on a publication – Learning to/from/by Design (BU Press, forthcoming in 2013) – that aims to address these questions by composing a varied collection of stories, biographies, experiences and points of views of international designers, educators and thinkers.
